About

An engineer's mind,
a coach's practice.

Portrait of Shankar Venkatraman
The short version

I spent more than twenty years leading engineering teams in the global semiconductor industry, at NXP Semiconductors, Broadcom and Freescale, with earlier roles at Hewlett Packard, ST Microelectronics and Robert Bosch, before moving into full-time coaching.

At NXP I built and scaled engineering organisations of 150-200 people, launching products that generated over $1.2B in annual revenue. At Broadcom I built the Android software organisation from scratch to ship the first Android phone on a Broadcom apps processor. During the pandemic I led an end-to-end M&A integration entirely remotely, folding a newly acquired company and its IP into the product line.

Today I work as an ICF PCC-credentialed executive coach based in Bangalore. I have logged 750+ hours and 170+ clients across India, the UK, France, USA, UAE, the Philippines, Taiwan, Ireland and Guam. I partner with engineering managers, directors and senior individual contributors as they step into leadership, and design and facilitate leadership and emotional-intelligence programmes for organisations.

The through-line of the work is simple: help capable people become the version of themselves that the next stage of their leadership requires.

How I coach

Partnership, evidence, and honest conversation.

Coaching is a partnership, not advice-giving. My job is to hold a thinking space that is genuinely safe, ask the questions you can't ask yourself, and stay curious about what's actually going on for you.

I lean on evidence-based frameworks such as emotional intelligence, mental fitness and systems thinking, because they hold up when the pressure is real. And I stay in continuous development myself, through supervision and peer practice, so the work you get is current.

Between sessions, my coachees can reach me over WhatsApp or email, whichever is easier in the moment. Email is the surest way to me: shankar@thecoachposition.com. Coaching doesn't only happen in the hour we're booked.

The whole person

"I coach because I believe people become more themselves through the work, and a more compassionate world follows from that."

Based in Bangalore. When I'm not coaching or facilitating, I read, walk, and spend time with family.

Let's talk.

A short, no-obligation conversation is the best way to see whether coaching with me is a fit for where you are.
